When the whole world smells of flowers, you are either in love - or in Weyher. Because the wine blossom has begun ! The delicate scent envelops us and enchants us every year. This year it is a little later than usual - the beginning of the year was cool. But actually this is our "normal" continental climate... as it was twenty years ago.
But no matter when the flowers start to bloom, the bees and bumblebees are thrilled. Every year we get a visit from a queen who is placed in the vineyard with a small entourage of worker bees and her hive. For many years, the royal journey has been undertaken by good friends who are experienced beekeepers. The bees then only have to fall headfirst into the flowers to find their nectar. A life like paradise, indeed! If the bees are full of energy, they can alternatively fly to the chestnut trees that bloom not far from the vineyards. We sell the sweet grape blossom honey and tart chestnut honey in the winegrower's café as soon as it has been harvested and bottled.
While we're on the subject of snacking: There's another new product in the online shop : WinzerWeingummi. A small start-up from Meißen near Dresden approached us and asked if we would like to supply the wine for their delicious wine gum cubes (with 10% alcohol!). Of course we would! And so an exciting collaboration between Saxony and the Palatinate came about. Everyone who tried the cubes from geb.-Weingummi spontaneously asked for more, because the cubes are damn tasty, fruity & winey at the same time. If you want to try them, you can order directly online or get the snacking package (wine & wine gum) straight away.
But back to the vineyard: The busy life of the bees doesn't bother the vines at all. As self-pollinators, they only need a little wind and reproduction is already taken care of. If you want to experience the scent and the buzzing live, you should plan a visit to the Palatinate now! The flowering lasts for about two weeks, as not all grape varieties bloom at the same time. Scheurebe and Müller-Thurgau are the first to bloom, Cabernet Blanc and others bloom in the middle, and Riesling and Muscat bring up the rear.
For us, this is the start of the countdown, because it takes exactly 100 days from flowering until the harvest begins. And until then, we are constantly on the move to get the best out of the 2023 vintage: continuous leaf work and selective plant protection determine our everyday life. By the way: if you need to get away from (office) life for a few days, you are very welcome to do a detailed wine tasting in our winegrower's café! Here we not only tell you the highlights of our wines, but also give you some input from our everyday winemaking life with insights into our vineyards.
