Microclimate – or why Weyher is heaven on earth for wine

There are places in Germany where it rains constantly. Alright, that's an exaggeration. But if it rains anywhere in the surrounding area, it's guaranteed to rain there. And sometimes you can even see it (especially beautifully on a country road): as if drawn with a string, the part of the road behind you is soaking wet, and the part of the road yet to come is bone dry. You look up at the sky in amazement and wonder who cut off the clouds here. At least if you're new to the area. Those who have lived there longer just shrug and say that it's often like that at this spot.

In the past, people observed natural conditions very closely and then adapted: it's no coincidence that cities were often founded on riverbanks and castles on hard-to-storm peaks. Today, we pay much less attention to natural conditions and the interactions created by our construction measures – often with unpleasant consequences. Anyone who has ever battled their way through the icy wind sweeping through the tall canyon-like streets of New York on a winter's day knows what we mean!

But today we want to talk about a remarkably clever decision, though it was made a few centuries ago: someone came to Weyher, looked around, and determined that there was hardly a more ideal spot on earth for viticulture. Why?

MOUNTAINS - Because the mountains are right nearby, guaranteeing a stable groundwater supply even in dry times through runoff – which our grapevines can easily reach with their long roots.

SOILS - Because the diverse soil types like granite, slate, colored sandstone, and calcareous marl perform exceptionally well in various weather conditions. So there's never a total crop failure, because while granite & slate retain little water and therefore produce even in rainy summers, colored sandstone and calcareous marl are guarantors of an abundant harvest, no matter how bone dry the season is.

FOREST – Because the Palatinate Forest in the immediate vicinity has a regulating and protective influence. Heat and winds are buffered, and beneficial insects find shelter.

THERMALS – Because the high altitude on the slope creates thermals that provide us with beneficial rain, while rain clouds a few kilometers away sail scornfully over the dry ground, without giving a single drop.

All of this together is unique. And all of this together is why Weyher is known in the wine world as a "Grand Cru" site, meaning an area where the best wines are reliably produced year after year. Our ancestors did a really good job! By the way, in this context, one speaks of a "microclimate" ... because as I said, a few kilometers away, the world looks completely different!

In times of climate change, a good microclimate is worth its weight in gold. Because while other regions – such as Burgundy and Champagne in France – have been battling late frosts for a good ten years now and once again have to heat their vineyards with oil candles this year (we've talked about it before), we in Weyher have not yet had to resort to such extreme measures.

Of course, we also feel the vagaries of climate change here. But true extremes leading to a complete crop failure were last experienced in the 1970s, when the entire Palatinate froze. Our microclimate, which ensures moderate and constant growing conditions, is therefore a huge advantage for which we are deeply grateful. Not everyone had such clever ancestors.

Speaking of climate: We actually have a personal "weather frog" in the village. Günter is around 90 years old and a passionate gardener and cactus breeder (which miraculously also thrive very well in our microclimate!).

If we want to know what the weather will be like, we invite Günter for a Riesling spritzer and ask him. For example, he recently told us that there is an old farmer's rule:

As everyone knows, church holidays are determined by the lunar cycle. It is well known that moon phases influence nature. But that the wind direction on Good Friday can tell us what the summer will be like... Günter revealed that to us with a wink! Here's the solution:

• with a north wind, we can expect a cool, wet summer with clear visibility

• with a southwest wind, also called a Sahara wind, we can expect a hot, dry summer with a lot of (reddish) dust

• with an east wind, a dry, continental air mass arrives, bringing clear skies, cool nights, and dry summers

• with a west wind, coming from the ocean, the summer will be changeable, humid & mild.

So. Now we don't need the news anymore.

Full of excitement, you are now undoubtedly asking us from which direction the wind blew here in our microclimate in Weyher this Good Friday 2026. This year it came from an easterly direction during the day, but shifted to southwest in the evening (around 7 p.m.). What does that tell us?

Let's try to act as a weather frog based on this: We expect a moderate summer 2026 with some precipitation (mixed), but since the hot and cold winds collide, the thermals will dance over the Palatinate Forest and there will be occasional thunderstorms, meaning we expect a stormy year.

Best to start counting the thunderclaps. Then we can provide you with statistics and prove to you how high our weather frog competence is.
