New breed!

The winegrower has two arch-enemies: Oidium and Peronospora . Sounds like science fiction, but it's powdery mildew . This causes the vines to wither. There's no cure for that... at least that's what we thought for a long time. But then came Valentin Blattner , who, together with the Pfälzer Rebschule Freytag, had taken on the cause of developing a Piwi variety .
Piwi stands for fungus-resistant . Such a varietal development can easily take twenty to thirty years, so this is not for people who want to see quick results. In 1991, Valentin Blattner , who is now considered one of the most promising vine growers in the world, managed to develop the first Cabernet Blanc vine.

The further development to marketability then lasted until 2003. The Graf von Weyher winery was one of the first three wineries in the world that was allowed to grow the variety for experimental purposes that year. For us it was an honor and at the same time more exciting than a thriller. It was an unbelievable feeling when the new grapes... without a name at the time, only provided with a number... could be harvested for the first time.
In 2008 we were allowed to sell the Cabernet Blanc for the first time, at that time with the note on each bottle that this grape variety was still declared as an experimental cultivation. The Cabernet Blanc has been regularly approved in Germany since 2012 and worldwide only since 2018. A long and tedious development, any uninitiated would say, but for vine growers, this is rapid product development! Normally this process takes more than twenty years.
But it was worth it: The Cabernet Blanc is so resistant to powdery mildew and downy mildew (said archenemies) that 70% less pesticides are needed. At the same time, it has an excellent taste and is therefore one of our gourmet wines. You can feel the Sauvignon Blanc combined with a certain southern touch ... but you should try it yourself!

What wine experts say:

"...Our tip this time is a PiWi wine, i.e. the result of breeding fungus-resistant vines that require little plant protection: This Cabernet Blanc does not emulate classic varieties, but results in something completely unique - and offers carefree drinking pleasure in every respect. Brave and right decision! " falstaff (2023), Weinguide Deutschland, p. 348

"Green-yellow play of colors; the bouquet shows the impressive composition of fine fruit of citrus, gooseberries and lychee as well as the elegant spiciness of green peppers; the taste shows a well-balanced acidity in combination with the expansive glaze and the attractive play of aromas; pronounced and long aftertaste. " DLG -Federal Wine Awards, Frankfurt am Main, 10/2021

"Bright straw yellow; intense exotic fruit aromas of ripe kiwi paired with gooseberries and slightly vegetative notes of mint, nettle and some green peppers; creamy and juicy on the palate with slightly sweet caramel notes and harmoniously balanced acidity; sustainable, complex and multi-layered. " DLG federal wine award , Frankfurt am Main, 06/2020

"Light straw yellow; the nose presents an intense fruit of banana, mango, pear and elderflower surrounded by nuances of caramel and roasted almonds; on the palate there is a fine aromatic aroma and a delicate vanilla note, complemented by the mild acid structure with a subtle sweetness ; Charming, creamy aftertaste. " DLG Federal Wine Awards, Frankfurt am Main, 08/2019

"Scent of yellow fruits (mirabelle plum). Melty and piquant in the mouth, light-footed with a delicate mineral note. The perfect partner for poultry, grilled, roasted or stewed, with rabbit, hearty fish dishes and vegetable casseroles... "Dr. Rolf Klein, experienced wine author and former editor-in-chief of the magazine "Weinwelt".
